Robert Koch, German physician and one of the founders of bacteriology, is best known for isolating the bacterium which causes tuberculosis, the cause of numerous deaths in the mid-19th century. For his discoveries in regard to tuberculosis, he received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1905.
